The Art of Slowing Down: Create a place where nothing needs to happen

The Art of Slowing Down: Create a place where nothing needs to happen

Life moves fast. Home doesn’t have to.

We answer messages over breakfast, check emails while the coffee is brewing and somehow manage to fill a free half hour with things that apparently needed doing.

Maybe that’s exactly why we need the opposite at home.

A place with no schedule. No purpose. A place with just one job: to make you want to stay a little longer.

And no, you don’t need to turn a spare room into a meditation studio.

Find the place you naturally gravitate towards

Don’t start with the furniture. Start with the place.

Maybe it’s that corner by the window where the morning light comes in. An unused part of the living room. Or the spot by the garden doors where you always find yourself looking outside for a little longer than planned.

The best place isn’t necessarily where interior design rules say a chair should go.

It’s where you would choose to sit when there’s nowhere else you need to be.

Choose materials you want to touch

A room doesn’t feel warm because everything matches perfectly.

Quite the opposite.

Solid teak with visible grain. Handwoven rattan that isn’t exactly the same everywhere. Soft linen. Wool. Ceramics that still show a little of how they were made.

Natural materials have something reassuring about them. They don’t need to be perfect to be beautiful.

Thankfully.

It takes a little pressure off the rest of us too.

Comfort first. Styling second.

Of course it can look beautiful.

But if you need to change position after ten minutes because your back starts complaining, you’ve mainly created a very photogenic problem.

So start with a lounge chair you can actually sit comfortably in. Add a cushion. A small table within reach. A soft rug under your feet.

And then know when to stop.

Not every empty space is asking for a vase, basket, candleholder or carefully positioned coffee-table book.

Sometimes empty is just right.

Let colour play a small part

Slow living doesn’t necessarily have to mean fifty shades of beige.

Start with calm, natural colours — cream, sand, wood — but add something that makes the space feel like yours.

An ochre cushion. A touch of burgundy. Petrol-blue ceramics. A green plant or a few flowers.

A couple of accents are often enough.

After all, you’re creating somewhere you want to sit, not a showroom where you’re afraid to move anything.

Let the light do some of the work

During the day, natural light does most of the work for you.

A chair by a window feels different in the morning than it does at the end of the afternoon. And once it gets dark outside, a few soft pools of light can completely change the atmosphere.

A pendant light. A small table lamp. Indirect lighting.

Better three gentle sources of light than one ceiling lamp enthusiastically trying to interrogate every square centimetre of the room.

Cosiness, after all, likes a little shadow.

And then something happens

When everything feels right, you haven’t simply created a beautiful corner.

You’ve created a place where time suddenly matters a little less.

Choose a chair that ruins your plans

This might be our favourite part.

Everyone should have one place at home where you sit down thinking:

“I’ll stay here for five minutes.”

And 45 minutes later, you’re still there.

Not because the chair makes you more productive. Not because it was ergonomically designed for a Zoom meeting.

But because it’s comfortable.

Put two lounge chairs opposite each other and things get even more dangerous. Before you know it, you’re having a conversation without anyone reaching for their phone after seven minutes.

That’s what we call a successful evening.

Now all you have to do is sit down

Maybe that’s what The Art of Slowing Down is really about.

Not living more slowly because you’re supposed to. Not ceremoniously locking your phone in a drawer. And definitely not adding yet another thing to the list of things you really should be doing more often.

Just having a place at home where you genuinely like to be.

Alone. Together. With coffee. With a book. With music. Or with absolutely nothing.

You’ve found the place. The chair is waiting. The light is just right.

Now for the hardest part.

Sit down.

The rest can wait.
